Lou was a great storyteller. There are so many stories I could write here of a life well-lived. But of all the stories that he told, the one that resonates the most is the one that I can tell about him.
I remember Lou standing at the side of the hallway at school, while all of the rest of his class passed into the lunch room. He was talking to a little boy who was having some behavior issues that day. And as he's talking to this little boy in a very calm voice, he was saying, "You are a really great kid, and I know you can do better than this." And this little boy was listening. He was hanging on to Lou's every word. Because when any of us are having a rough day, we just need someone to tell us that we are still loved and someone to still see us for who we are on the inside.
    That was Lou.

That was the incredible teacher and friend that I will remember.

    Rest In Peace, Lou.

Mr. Pignotti was one of the best, most inspiring teachers I've ever had. Before he became my teacher I was a quite kid and he changed that. He helped me become more outgoing by letting us put on plays at the end of the day and would tell me I'd be a great actress (I wouldn't be but he gave me lots of confidence by saying that). He's going to be extremely missed. Rest In Peace Mr. Pignotti

My deepest condolences to the Pignotti Family. I had the pleasure of knowing Mr. P when I had him as a teacher at Jefferson and then getting to see him teach my younger brother at Roosevelt. He was the most compassionate, patient, loving human being and teacher I've ever had. He truly made an impact in my life growing up, always cared for me like family throughout my elementary schooling. He will be deeply missed by everyone.
    Rest In Peace Mr. P

    Cousin Lou;

A flood of family memories hit hard and fast once I heard about your passing.  Family gatherings of many years past... Christmas Eves, birthday parties, whiffle ball games (I'm up!), family picnics, White Sox games, and fun Saturday visits to Grandpa's and Minga's... As kids, we would think those days would never end!!! As we grew up and took on the real world, we were able to keep up to speed with each other. This was especially true when we shared stories about work.  As fellow teachers, we always had many classroom stories to share... some made us laugh... some made us sad... some made us better teachers... but all of the stories were out of love and enjoyment for our chosen profession.  Teaching is not easy by any means, but the more we shared experiences, the more we both knew it was the right career path for us.  It is even more evident now as I read through the beautiful stories shared on this page.  Your students were blessed to have you as their teacher!

Rest Peacefully, Cousin! I can see you now in a fishing boat with your Uncle Lawrence (my Dad) trolling for the best spot to catch that "Big One".

Dear Rosemary loving mother of "Boo",  We (all of your gal pals from work) watched your young son grow up into such a fine young man. We could see Luke when he came to visit because he was tall. Boo was a lot younger and shorter and we could only hear his voice behind the other side of the gate.  Then he grew up and his beautiful smile would greet us. I will always remember how he loved to visit you and stayed your best friend. My prayers and thoughts are with you and your family.

Sending my prayers and condolences to the family of Mr Pignotti. I want to thank you all for sharing such a loving and kind man with all of his students. He wasn't your average teacher- he actually cared! He taught many of us life-long skills that have carried over into adulthood. He will ALWAYS be my favorite teacher! The man who loved horses and always had a way to make you smile and feel special. The world needs more educators life him. He was an asset to Gavin and all the students who were blessed to be in one of his classes. I happened to have him 3 years in a row.
Short story- I shared a post a few times on Facebook about my favorite teacher. Another student saw it and found him at his local bank. Two years ago we reconnected. He was the same "Pignotti". A man who loved teaching. Below I want to share his words to me. Shows that he loved what he did!!
I'm forever thankful to you and I'll always remember you!!!
    your Favorite student Tiara ❤️
    ----------
I am filled with such joy by your words. THANK YOU! I am teaching at Roosevelt and God willing will retire in 5 years. I still love what teaching should be (students 1st) ... From Gavin I went to Jefferson, and now to Roosevelt. My favorite time period (and I just shared this recently at a teacher workshop) was my years at Dr. Charles E. Gavin. There was something so special then that I can't put into words. What a blessing it was yesterday, to go into the credit union and walk out with the feelings I had. What a gift!!! You gave me such a wonderful confirmation about my vocation as a teacher, I am so very grateful for that. I am so proud of what you wrote about me coming from someone as accomplished as you! I am so very PROUD OF YOU!!! Uof I yessssssss!!!

My heartfelt condolences to Lou's family and friends. It was obvious to all who worked with him that Lou was a truly amazing teacher and was dedicated to his students. I was the band director for District 170 for five years and had the fortune of interrupting his class a few times a year to recruit new students. He was, without a doubt, the most supportive teacher I knew for our growing program. Roosevelt had always been where the largest percentage of band members came from, it was the school with the highest rate of retention within the program and Lou's class always had a disproportionate amount of students start to learn how to play instruments. This was in no small part due to Mr. Pignotti talking up music, our band and myself before I stepped into his classroom, his participation in recruitment sessions where he made sure his class remembered that he also was involved in music and his consistent excitement that some of his students were considering to join band. I appreciate all his support over the years and will miss him dearly.

It was so nice to meet your sister in law and the rest of  your family today.  May God bless you and your entire family. I also saw your mom and I remember seeing her at Jefferson way back 22 years or so. Mr. P., your memories will last forever. Thank you for everything you've done for me as a kid, and as an adult.   Looking back, I'm so glad I was able to track you down years after you left Jefferson School and have you over my home. There's too many funny memories I will continue to share. We had a deal to share the story how you saved my life with your big belly in 4th grade.  You said its a story you told every year on the first day of school. I believed you, I visited your classroom year after year and the kids loved that story.  Once you left Jefferson, we went a several years without seeing each other because I didn't know where you were teaching. Until I saw you one day in the parking lot on my way home. I pulled a U turn, beeped at you and drove right into the parking lot.  We talked maybe a half hour outside that day. That was 4 years ago. After, I invited you to my daughter's birthday. I know you were caring for your mom but I convinced you to come visit and stay for a short time.  That short time ended up being the entire day with us. You got to talk to my mom, talk about funny memories in 4th grade and you finally got to meet my daughter. I'm so happy she had the privilege to meet you. Soon after, I texted you that we are expecting our second. I sent you a picture, but I don't think you received it because you were still using your 1990's flip phone. I sent you a picture after she was born and we agreed to hang out again.  Then 2020 came, and we couldn't hang out. I'm glad we were still able to text and keep in touch. I will miss you Mr. P. We took pictures together that day you were with us but I was too shy to give it to your family this morning.. maybe one day.  Look after all of us, you will be dearly missed!

My heart goes out to the Pignotti family. Man theirs so many things I can say about this great amazing fun loving soul of a man. He was my 4th grade teacher back at Jefferson and my brothers teacher as well. He was so loving and caring about his students he always wanted the best for us. I'll forever cherish the life you've had here and I'm so glad I was able to be apart of your teaching career. You told me sky is the limit as far as you wanna take it. And even after I graduated everytime you seen me it was like relighting a flame that never burned out. We would talk about everything trying to catch up on the time we had missed since grade school. No matter where life takes us just know I love you forever Mr.Pignotti! You were such an amazing mentor who I looked up to all the time. A great teacher, coach, listener and friend all in one. Thank you for being such an amazing teacher and an even better best friend. Gonna miss you a lot Mr.P but I know you're always with me to guide me in the right direction. Love you always! -Sabastian, Mercedes, Andrew Torres and Torres Family
