Mary Prendergast nee DiGiovanni - 86

2/4/1932 - 4/28/2018

Chicago Heights

Mary (DiGiovanni) Prendergast entered eternal life on April 28, 2018 peacefully at home with her family by her side. Mary was the matriarch and the last living member of her generation. Her spirit is carried on by her five children, 16 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and many cousins, nieces, and nephews too numerous to count. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her. Mary, fondly known by many as “Mary Di”, is reunited with her late husband John, who she referred to as “the love of my life”. They shared 49 years of marriage together. Family was their heart and joy and their legacy will carry on. Mary was born and raised in Chicago Heights and also raised her family there. She graduated from Bloom High School in 1950 and later went on to earn a degree in Early Childhood Development. She was a life long bridge player passing along that passion to many of her children and grandchildren. She was a devout Catholic and long time member of Saint Agnes Parish where she was very active in the church community serving in many capacities. Mary loved children, so it’s no surprise how she dedicated herself to working with children through her lifetime. With 5 children at home, she worked at several preschools, until finally launching and directing a preschool program for the Chicago Heights Park District, where she worked for many years. After retiring from teaching, she became a nanny for 3 very special families. They became very close and the children, now adults and their parents have kept in close contact through the years. To know her was to love her and she would love you right back. She will live on in our hearts and memories. And, those memories are treasures. Resting at Panozzo Bros. Funeral Home, 530 W. 14th St. (U.S. Rt. 30, 3 blks E. of Western Ave.), Chicago Heights on Friday May 4th from 3:00 PM to 8:00 Pm. Funeral Saturday 9:15 AM to St. Agnes Church, 1501 Chicago Rd., Chicago Heights. Mass 10:00 AM. Interment Evergreen Hills Cemetery, Steger. 708-481-9230 or panozzobros.com
