Bernice Gilbert nee Saudargas, age 98, passed away peacefully on September 24th at St. James Manor in Crete where she had resided for many years. Raised by her grandmother in Lithuania, Bernice immigrated to join her parents in Chicago’s Roseland neighborhood at the age of 19. Soon after, she married her husband Domenick Gilbert. Along with her husband, she ran Gilbert Tailors at 115th and South Park Avenue for many years. Mr. Gilbert passed away in 1986. Daughter of the late Frank Saudargas and Mary Norvaisite. Sister in law of the late Benedetta Mazzei and Philip Gilbert. Beloved aunt of Larry and Rev. Fr. Philip F. Gilbert, CPPS. During her 18 year residence at Tolentine Center in Olympia Fields, and her years at St. James Manor, Bernice was a tireless worker. Her elegance and gentile nature helped spread much-needed love and cheer to her fellow residents and staff. She will be fondly remembered…hers’ was a life well lived. Services were private.
