Donald K. Berg, age 89, passed away peacefully Thursday evening in Beecher, surrounded by his children and beloved family. A longtime Chicago Heights resident, born and raised in Joliet, Mr. Berg graduated from Joliet Catholic High School and St. Ambrose College. He returned to Joliet Catholic as an educator and coach, and later moved on to similar positions at Marian Catholic High School. Known as “Coach Berg” to thousands of students and athletes he coached and mentored. Coach Berg taught and served as Athletic Director and head boys’ basketball coach for many years, briefly retiring from coaching in 1978, but returning later to coach girls’ basketball at Marian Catholic and Beecher High Schools. He is a member of both the Marian Alumni Hall of Fame and Marian Legends Athletic Hall of Fame. Proud “50 year member” of Pipefitters Local 597. Loving husband of the late Jacqueline nee Larson. Beloved father of Sharon (Richard) Wehling, Nancy (Thomas) Macocha, Michael (Brigitte), Patrick (Betty), Joseph, Donald (Kim), and David (Laura) Berg. Devoted grandfather of 20 and great-grandfather of 7. Brother of the late Raymond Berg. Brother-in-law of Thomas and Darlene Larson. Lifelong friend of Michael and Katie Goldrick. Beloved uncle and dear friend of many. Resting at Panozzo Bros. Funeral Home, 530 W. 14th St. (U.S. Rt. 30, 3 blks E. of Western Ave.), Chicago Heights on Tuesday January 16th from 2:00 PM to 9:00 PM. Funeral Wednesday 9:15 AM to St. Agnes Church, 1501 Chicago Rd., Chicago Heights. Mass 10:00 AM. Interment Assumption Cemetery, Glenwood.
