Jan married the love of his life, Deborah Bernardi, an artist and art educator, on June 25, 1977. in Chicago, Illinois. The arts played a central role throughout their life together.

Jan’s entrepreneurial spirit led quickly to business ownership with partner Dan West. He liked to cook and friends and family will attest to his skill. At home or away, he enjoyed fine dining, good wines, and the companionable pleasures of the table.

Deb and I were best friends all through school. When Deb met Jan, I knew they were a perfect fit. I was maid of honor at their wedding. My most embarrassing moment (now funny) was their wedding rehearsal dinner. I am a veterinarian and was working at Lincoln Park Zoo with the head zoo vet. We were treating the seals and had drained the seal pool. The seals found it great fun to push us around in the slippery muck at the bottom of the pool. After three showers I got to the rehearsal and the dinner. As I sat next to Jan, he very politely asked what kind of perfume I had on. Always the perfect gentleman, he was quiet and respectful I told him it was fish from the seals. Very gently and politely he started to laugh. He had the kind of laugh that made everyone laugh. He wasn't even upset but found it hilariously funny Certainly a scholar and a gentleman. Loved you and Deb my friend- take care of my dogs and horses up there. The world is a poorer place without you.

Jan was the older brother I never had. Our mothers were sisters and we only lived about a mile apart in Roseland. We visited the Zajacs often. Jan fostered an interest in me in nature, Native American lore, animals, chemistry, cars and model rockets, at an early age. He was always fascinated in and exploring new things. Jan also taught me the concept of "cool". He knew how to dress - whether it was for class at Mendel or going out to Uncle Steve Surma's restaurant. I first learned about "stereo music" from Jan. In more recent years I was invited to join him and Don Surma for sporting clay shooting and pheasant hunting. Jan's hospitality was legendary. He will be missed.

I am very saddened to hear this news. Jan was my Dad's business partner and our long time family friend. I still remember from when I was a little girl the excitement of having Jan and Deborah visit us. I loved listening and learning about all their trips and adventures. Somehow it wasn't boring and dull to learn about history, cultures and different lands far away like it was in the classroom. Their storytelling skills were captivating. Jan was always kind, charming, generous, the most eclectic worldly person I knew and I swear always had some humorous or enlightening parting words to leave you with. He will be missed by many. My deepest condolences to you Deborah and your families.
