Larry James Vena Sr - 83

4/21/2026

Larry James Vena Sr., age 83, was a longtime resident of Matteson and proud native of Benton Harbor, Michigan. A graduate of Bloom High School, Class of 1960, Larry lived a life defined by hard work, generosity, and the importance of family.

Larry began his career as a baker and carpenter. He also helped run the family's beloved restaurant, Romano’s Pizza alongside his longtime friend and father-in-law, Leo Romano and mother-in-law, Rose Romano. Later, Larry dedicated over 40 years to Dominick’s Finer Foods, where he served in as the manager of the meat department in addition to other leadership roles. Reliable, resourceful and highly respected, Larry had the rare ability to fix, build, or figure out just about anything—truly a jack of all trades.

Outside of work, Larry found happiness in life's simple and meaningful pleasures. His greatest joy was spending time with his wife, children and grandchildren. He loved cooking and baking for those he cared about, tending to his garden, working on carpentry projects, and spending time at the family's lake cottage.

Above all, Larry was devoted to his family and friends. He was always there to help and if someone needed support, he never hesitated - he was already on his way. His kindness, dependability, positive attitude and infectious smile will leave a lasting legacy in the lives of all who were fortunate to know him.

Larry was the devoted husband of 61 years to Rose Marie (née Romano). Loving father of Larry (Kelly) Vena Jr., Leo (Kelley) Vena, and Kathi (David) Hilgen. Cherished grandfather of Rachel (Rob) Bordignon, Michael and Gabriella “Gabby” Vena, Benjamin “Ben” and Emilia “Emi” Hilgen. Son of the late Phyllis (née Miceli) and Samuel Vena. Brother‑in‑law of the late Katherine Romano. He is also survived by his cousin, Barbara Abbott (Postelli), who he considered the sister he never had. Fond uncle and loyal friend to many.

Family and friends will gather Saturday, May 16, 2026, at San Rocco Oratory, 315 East 22nd Street, Chicago Heights, from 11:00 a.m. until the time of Mass at 12:00 p.m. Inurnment private. For information, call 708‑481‑9230 or visit panozzobros.com.

Rest my brother. You fought the fight for your love of Rose. You always were a winner, you proved it till the end. My life was blessed the day we met and what life's lessons you taught me about friendships and family I will try to live up too. Sheila and I will forever be thankful for you and Rose. See you again some day. Prost!

To my cousins: Your dad will be sorely missed. I wish I could've seen him when I was in town, but he was feeling very ill that day and I missed the opportunity. Love and condolences to all. Allen

Larry and Rose Marie welcomed me into their home and family 50 years ago. Providing me with a place to stay, delicious food, a lot of laughs, and unconditional love whenever I needed it. Even after a long day at work, when I knew Larry just wanted to put his feet up and relax, he never left me alone at the dinner table (as I was always the last one eating). Larry and Rose Marie would sit attentively, listening to me, allowing me to enjoy every bite of their delicious meals, knowing I needed those moments with them. Their home was often a safe haven for me. I am forever grateful. My deepest condolences to the entire family, Larry had a huge impact on so many lives. Laura Luki

I worked with Larry many years ago, while working at Romano's Pizza. Larry was fun and great guy to work with, and was a real nice person. My Condolences for Larry's family.
