Michael Patrick Raftery - 83

6/11/2026

Michael Patrick Raftery, age 83, went home to our Lord on June 9, 2026. Beloved husband of Ginny (Wall) Raftery for 55 years. Devoted and loving father of Matthew (Dennis Bartolomei) Raftery, Anne (Leo) Cassidy, Maureen (Patrick) Hisel, Erin (Scott) Deluga, and Daniel (Holly) Raftery. Cherished "Papa" grandfather to Keegan, Leo, and Cara Cassidy; Ireland, Faustin, and Blaise Kelly; Aubrey and Emma Deluga; Madeleine Raftery; and Nora and Gavin Hisel. Dear son of the late Thomas and Beatrice Raftery. Fond Brother of the late Reverend Thomas Raftery, the late Dolores (Bernard) Mackiney, the late Robert (Charlotte) Raftery, the late James (Patricia) Raftery. Caring brother-in-law of Larry (Kathy) Wall, John "Murph" (late Caryl) Wall, Marilouise "Wees" (late Terry) Wall, MD, the late JoAnn (late Bill) Ruff, MD, late Mary Helen (late Larry) Connolly, late Betty Jane (the late Jim) O'Toole, and late Frank Wall.

Mike was a fun-loving uncle to many nieces and nephews. Mike was a teacher, a man of deep faith, moral substance, and profound care of people, and most notably his students. He had a calling to teaching as a very young man. That was the vocation that he followed, and he pursued learning his entire life, eventually earning a Master's Degree from the University of Chicago. As a young teacher, he enjoyed guiding canoe trips in Canada's Quetico Provincial Park with groups of students and even convincing his bride to be, to join him.

He started his career teaching 6th grade at St. Albert the Great for 2 years, then moving on to his alma mater Brother Rice High School for 8 years, Rich East High School for 20 years, and finishing his career at Marian Catholic High School for another 23 years. All in all, Mike taught for an astonishing 53 years, a calling indeed. He sponsored the newspaper at Rich East for many years, The Revellier, of which he loved and was very proud. He fostered his students' ability to speak their truth, and defended their first amendment right fervently. He was also very fond of the many girls tennis teams that he coached. Literature was his passion, as he amassed his own personal library, and read everyday. He led his students in rich discussions and wanted each of them to think for themselves. Something which his students repaid him for, by nominating him for several Golden Apple Awards over the years. He was always the most passionate about a lively class debate as a teacher. In retirement, he still found himself going back to Marian Catholic, to help and tutor students, but also enjoyed time with his bride that included many trips to Michigan, Minnesota, and downtown Chicago.

Mike was passionate about the arts, as reflected in his subscription to the Court Theater, and many trips to the Chicago Symphony, the Marriott Theater, and the Art Institute. Mike was also an athlete and Chicago sports fan throughout life, and enjoyed spirited and friendly competition with sports such as hockey, tennis, golf and racquetball. He enjoyed running and swimming for his health and took his kids to the pool routinely for years. Mike was a loving husband and father above all, eternally devoted to his dear Ginny.

'Mr. Raftery' (I have to use that term) was my teacher for one year at Brother Rice High School. I was not his favorite by any stretch of the imagination, but we got along well enough. I have often thought of him over the decades and I have never forgotten some of the material he chose for our class---it was a free-form substitute for 'religion class' that explored literature, music, cinema, philosophy, etc. We spent a couple of classes watching 'The Loneliness of the Long-Distance Runner,' a perfect choice for teenage boys. Teachers of his caliber can have an immense impact on students, even without singling them out for special attention. Many people would judge me today as successful, educated, etc., etc., according to conventional measures. If I have any real worth, I am sure Mr. Raftery's influence, fleeting as it may have seemed at the time but amplified over the decades, was partly responsible. I will never forget him.

Dear Ginny, Very sad to hear of Mike's passing. We so enjoyed your company the few times we were together whether at a post symphony dinner, a Beethoven party or just the occasional contacts in Beverly. We've thought of you both often since we moved to North Carolina 40 years ago. With love, Mary and Kevin Haggerty

As someone who benefited from Mr Raftery's time and attention in English class, the tennis team and the Rich East school paper, please accept my condolences at his passing. His dedication to his students, his humor and his deep love of books were readily apparent and appreciated--he really loved what he was doing and as his student I responded to that. Thanks for sharing him with all of us--great teachers leave a legacy with all those fortunate enough to have shared tiem with them.

So sorry to hear of your passing, Mr. Raftery. You've changed my life. You've changed so many lives. We didn't deserve a teacher as good as you, but I'm so glad we had you regardless. Thank you for believing in me, for showing me a love of literature, and for showing me how to love myself.

I was Mike's teaching partner in the American Studies course we created at Marian. I was responsible for the history component of that course. I so enjoyed teaching with him because of the joy and passion he displayed in his interactions with the students. Not only did he he show his love of literature, but also his profound commitment to their spiritual growth. He saw teaching as an art rather than a technological undertaking. He was not the person to go to for high technology! He also had a terrific sense of humor. All of his students can regale you with accounts of the antics we perpetrated. Mike was a one of a kind. I will miss him dearly.

Mr Raftery was an amazing mentor to me and patiently encouraged me as student Editor of the Rich East Reveiller 1975-77. He not only taught us English, but also demonstrated iin his own life what it meant to live life with character & integrity. Of all my teachers, Mr Raftery had the greatest impact on my life. God Bless! ❤️

I'm so sorry to hear this news. Mr. Raftery was an inspirational teacher and an even better person. Many of my favorite high school memories took place in his English/Literature classes or in the Reveiller workroom. It's been 35+ years, but I still remember Mr. Raftery's wisecracks and wise counsel, which often went hand in hand! I am eternally grateful to have spent time with Mr. Raftery during my formative years. Sending prayers and condolences to the entire Raftery family.

I did not know Mike but I knew Ginny through working in school district 162. I'm so sorry for your family's loss. I think I still have a couple of cards I bought from Ginny 25 years ago in my card box now. Praying for you all.

Sorry for your loss. I did not have the privilege of having him as a teacher, but for sure knew the impact he had at Rich East. And was honored to be in plays / musicals with Matt.

I am so sorry to hear this. Mr. Raftery was my teacher for a couple different classes at Marian from 1999–2001. He was incredibly inspiring and motivating. I was lucky enough to have him for AP English my junior year as part of American Studies with Mr. Rodey. After that experience, I tried to take every class he taught that was available to me, including a memorable religion class my senior year. He was incredibly supportive and understanding when he learned about difficult situations in my personal life. I cannot fully express how important that was for a 17-year-old going through very scary things. He was a steady, safe presence in my life, and I saw so many ways that he looked out for me and my classmates. I have talked about him so many times over the years. My husband and son know him by name because I have shared so many stories about his classroom, why he was my favorite teacher, and the enormous impact he made on my life. Over the years, I have enjoyed his social media posts, which always made me proud that he had been my teacher and that I had the opportunity to know such an incredible human being. I was thinking of him this morning and had been planning to send him a message today to tell him what a profound difference he made in my life. I am heartbroken that I didn’t get to send it. He made an immeasurable impact on the world. My deepest condolences are with his wife, his family, and everyone who loved him.
