Douglas Stanley Newlin - 69
Douglas Stanley Newlin, 69, Born July 8, 1951 passed away Wednesday, March 17, 2021, surrounded by family.
Better known as Grandpa Choo Choo to his six grandchildren, his death has left a deep sadness of a life lost too soon. He wore the badge of father and grandfather proudly. His face lit up when he spoke of his family and watched his grandchildren play. He was always willing to help his family and friends, and was incredibly handy—he built swing sets and playhouses, helped install cabinets and counters—he could do it all.
He was very passionate about trains and cars. When his children were young, he built a large Lionel train layout that took up a quarter of the family room. He continued to add to it throughout the years, always buying new trains and fixing up old ones. When he wasn’t tinkering with his trains, he was detailing his beloved blue BMW, which he often drove down to the river while blasting some of his favorite music. He didn’t mind a good, long drive.
He worked for Saco Industries for 40 years, where he built lifelong friendships and connections.
He was a lover of movies, especially classics and horror. He enjoyed the suspense and watching others respond to the eerie music and sounds. Often times yelling out loud just to scare you.
He loved a good joke and making people laugh. Absolutely nothing was off limits and you could always count on him for fun stories at family parties.
Doug was preceded in death by his father, Malcolm Newlin, and his mother, Susan Newlin.
He is survived by his son, Justin Newlin, daughter-in-law, Sarah Newlin, and their four children—Allyana, Jax, Cierra, and Ayla, his daughter, Samantha Beno, son-in-law, Anthony Beno, and their two children—Mikey and Sydney. As well as his ex-wife, Debra Newlin, with whom he remained good friends with, and her partner, Pam Koebel.
Memorial Visitation at Panozzo bros. Funeral Home 530 W 14th St, (US Rt 30, 3 blks E of Western Ave), Chicago Heights on Saturday, April 3., 2021 from 1:00 pm until 4:00 pm. Due to the pandemic, only 50 people at a time, masks must be worn, and social distancing required while inside the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in Doug’s name to the South Suburban Humane Society www.southsuburbanhumane.org/donate would be appreciated by the Newlin family. He had a real soft spot for animals and had many furry family members throughout his life.

Having worked with Doug for 27 years, I can not express how much he will be missed. He and I over the years laughed and cried and argued like brother and sister. We often talked about our grandbabies, and what a blessing they are. The cherry on top of life. My heart felt sympathies to all in his most precious family. I was a big fan of his trains too! God bless.
